What do I need to consider with a fold-out insert?
When making a gatefold there are a few parameters to keep in mind. You need to know your trim size to calculate where your folds will be.
This is for interiors only. For covers, we do French flaps and can send you a cover template.
As an example, with an 8-1/2" x 11" trim size, the first page of the gatefold will need to be sized 1/8" less than the final trim size—so it does not close to the edge of the book when production does the final trim step on the bound book. So the fold would be at 8-3/8" with an 8-1/2" x 11" trim size.
Then the gatefold portion of the fold-out cannot come any closer than 3/8" to the gutter. So with an 8-1/2 x 11 trim size, the gatefold only folds back 5-1/8"—so there is plenty of room and no need to worry about needing a second fold.
The fold-out needs to be the height of your book, so in our example, 11".
Keep in mind we're using the 8-1/2" x 11" trim size as our example, a 6" x 9" trim size would of course require different measurements.
